Iron & Steel

Iron and Steel Industry have kilns through which materials are raised to high temperature in a continuous process. Due to this, the temperature of the outer surface of the kiln is around 200-300 degree Celsius which is presently radiated into the atmosphere. For a kiln of length 70-80 m, the energy radiated is large. A part of this energy can be captured and converted into useful work.

By using Oorja’s waste heat recovery system, a part of the heat that is radiated into the atmosphere can be captured and converted into power or used for space cooling.

1. The hot water can be used to generate power using ORCs.

2. The hot water generated can be integrated into VAM and chilled water produced can be used to cool spaces.

3. The recovered heat can also be used to boiler preheating for captive power plant.

4. The recovered heat can also be used to boiler preheating for captive power plant.

5. The process offsets tonnes of GHG emissions by replacing the conventional methods for cooling or drying or heating presently in use.

The proposed system will have heat recovery panels, i.e. aluminium panels with copper tube embedded in it will be placed around the kiln preferably where temperatures are higher. The panels have water at ambient temperature circulated through them. Through radiation, the temperature of the water is raised to 90-95 deg Celsius. In this way, from a kiln of length 70-80 m, 3-4 Kw/sq.mt of power can be captured.

Iron and steel industries are the backbone of India’s economy and it is important that the plants are operated at the highest efficiency and generate minimum GHGs emissions.
